It may have been a quiet and relatively unproductive conclusion to Factor X's tournament season in Albuquerque this past week, but little did they know that as they were struggling on this year's National Championships pattern, the fruits of their 2008 labors were rolling into their mailbox in the form of prize fund checks from Rutland, Vermont (Green Mountain Open), Gardner (Massachusetts State Championships) and Shelburne, Vermont (Champlain International Tournament).

With Factor X's final tour stop of the 2007-08 winter season less than two weeks away, final preparations are in full swing as the team prepares for its trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the 2008 USBC Open Championships.

For the second year in a row, Factor X did quite well for themselves at the Champlain International Tournament. In 2007, it was the heroics of Gardner locals Tom Clukay and Matt Coe who stole the show. Coe's star again shone brightly in 2008, but it was the play of the team's Northampton connection - Jimmy Girard and Gary Subocz - who's stars went supernova in 2008.

It was another fun, yet humbling, experience in 2008 for most of the Factor X and Team Reyes participants who descended upon Rochester, New York this past Memorial Day weekend for the 40th running of the Lilac City Tournament. As has been the case over the last several years now, both tournament sites (Gates Bowl and AMF Olympic Bowl) have opted to replace their high-scoring house conditions of years past with much more challenging tournament patterns that are less forgiving when bowlers miss left or right of target. For some teammates, the change seems almost welcome and is taken in stride as a challenge, something that merely requires a few games to re-acclimate themselves to yesteryear's tougher lane conditions; for others, that re-acclimation seemingly never comes. What is most interesting about this particular tournament however is that, regardless of who are conquered and who are the conquerors, all have tremendous fun, and the stop remains a favorite of both Gardner- and Northampton-based teams.

Congratulations to Factor X, who represented their state and their home house well this past weekend at the Massachusetts State USBC Bowling Association Championships, unofficially finishing in 5th place handicap and 7th place overall. Leading the charge for the X Force in totally expected fashion was the team's hottest bowler in 2008, mighty Matt Coe. After "struggling" slightly in Saturday's events with sub-average sets of 660 and 682, Coe returned to the form that netted him his all-time high season average of 230 in the team event, firing games of 237, 278 and 248 for 763.

It's somewhat ironic that two weeks after the end of the 2007-08 winter league season, Factor X's busiest time of the year would arrive, but that's exactly what will happen later this weekend as the X Force begins their nine-day, two-city, multi-tournament stretch between Gardner, Massachusetts and Rochester, New York. For some teammates, it will be the most games they have bowled in such a short period of time all season long - leagues included - with some bowlers bowling more than 40 tournament games in that stretch... practice not included!

With tournament season now in full swing, most of Gardner's elite have been busy in recent weeks bowling up and down New England, getting their games in shape and looking to bring home some extra spending cash in the process. In terms of Monday Night action, that means most teams are hitting their stride as season's end approaches, a fact that is confirmed by the tight standings race that has developed in the second half. Nine teams entered the night within seven points of first place, with two of those teams being this week's combatants: Factor X and Jesse's Gang.

Factor X and Factor X Dos spent most of the season at opposite ends of the spectrum. While X spent most of the first half of the year in third, Dos spent the bulk of their time in the bottom third of the standings. During the last month of the season, both were headed in opposite directions; X losing week after week to teams beneath them, Dos coming up with some key victories late. About the only thing both these two teams will share this off-season will be their distaste for their final position in the standings, as both came together in eighth place; Dos defeating the Brooklyn Babes 13-3 to move up a slot, and X losing to Brown-Carpenter 2-14 to finish with the same record as Dos, 112-144.

If there's one match the Coe family gets psyched for on Monday nights each year, it's their family grudge match. At least twice a year, the Coes get a chance to exact some good-natured ribbing upon each other, not only between Matt, Wayne and father Ray, but with Matt's father-in-law Phil Fisher as well. Back in week 15, it was Matt Coe's Factor X battery mates who claimed bragging rights, as X survived a close shave in game number one only to dominate the rest of the night en route to a 5-0 sweep. That week, it was the bottom half of the Factor X lineup that did most of the damage, with Tom Clukay firing 680, Will Allen 664, and Mighty Matt himself leading the cause with 749.

There was little good news to be had in the Factor X camp following this week's semi-final position round, as Factor X dropped to 7th place following a 10-6 loss to RTO and Factor X Dos fell back to 9th place after being walloped by Egeland-Marois 14-2.

Especially during Factor X's recent losing streak, getting off to strong starts has been a non-existent part of Factor X's repertoire. Making matters worse, many of the X Force's opponents during that slump have arrived late; a situation that a non-slumping X team usually takes advantage of. The frustrations of slow starts came to a head this week, when despite a Board of Directors meeting that delayed the start of the league nearly 15 minutes, the only member of Factor X's opponent this week was Jay Gilbert, captain of the aptly-named No Names Team #2... and still the team could not muster a game one win, even in the face of a forfeit!

Of all the teams who are relieved to see Hee Haw and Buzzsaw in their rear-view mirrors, none are happier than Factor X Dos. Having faced these two juggernauts more than any other team during the regular season thus far, Dos celebrated their independence with a 15-1 victory over Brown-Carpenter that vaulted them out of the last-place mud they had been mired in, all the way into eighth place. The news was not so positive for their Factor X cousins however, who are feeling the sting of back-to-back lackluster performances that have transformed them from third-place frontrunners into a team that has now backed themselves into a corner. X will need strong performances in both the semi-final and final rounds if they hope to have any chance of regaining those lost spots and earning the "best of the rest" title for 2008.

Ditto for Dream Team, which has been chomping at the bit for a little payback since week 13's 5-0 sweep at the hands of Bill Allen (753), Matt Coe (690), and the rest of the X Force.

It's a unique opportunity, one that doesn't come around very often. Bill Allen, Will Allen, Tom Clukay and Matt Coe will take to the lanes of their home house on the final weekend of the Massachusetts State USBC BA Championships tournament, hoping that their inside knowledge about the house and its transitioning lane patterns will give them an edge over some of the state's best bowlers. About the only question that still remains is, will any of that extra experience still mean anything by the final weekend of the tournament?

Factor X has ridden Matt Coe's coattails most of the Monday Night season this year, as time and time again, he has risen to the occasion, tossing the big game or series whenever called upon. But even Mighty Matt could not salvage victory for his teammates this time around; a big night by several members of Kris Huntley's Dark Side team, combined with a lack of focus by one of X Men and a lack of composure by another all came together on lanes 11 and 12 to hand Factor X their second 4-1 defeat in three weeks.

What a benchmark season it's been in the PBA Experience Doubles league. In terms of what the league perceived top average to be, bowlers didn't just move the bar, they threw the bar down off its perch altogether, trampling it into the mud on their way by. And for the two teams lucky enough to lay claim to the bowlers with those lofty averages, they will in all likelihood get to run several victory laps at season's end this year, turning what has traditionally been one of Gardner's tightest, most-competitive leagues into one which, if there's any competition to be had at all in the final month of the season, it will be between the rest of the teams that lie in the muddy aftermath below, all vying for the coveted third-place trophy.

Factor X had lots to be thankful for heading into week 28 of the Monday Night Handicap league. Last week's detour from their winning ways did little to damage their position in the standings; the team remained within striking distance of the leaders, just six points out of first place. And with Coe returning to the lineup in time for this week's battle against the Moonshiners, the team had to like their chances of returning to their winning ways before any further damage could be done.

In the sport of bowling, just as with almost any sport, it stands to reason that the more you practice, the better you become. Once you've got the basic form and technique down, it becomes a matter of taking all of the moving parts and putting them together in as simple and streamlined a manner as you can. If you can repeat shots, you should score well. With recent upticks in lineage due to increased tournament participation over the last couple of weeks, team co-captains Tom Clukay and Matt Coe both put that theory to the test this week and proved it to be true; Clukay setting his Monday night high score on the season with 714, and Coe missing his season-best by a single pin, 749.

The league's record-setting pace that took on momentum of its own in week five continued into week six, although on a much-more isolated basis this time around. Hee Haw extended their first place lead with their second consecutive 16-0 sweep, the first time in the league's history any team has recorded back-to-back shutouts, and Jason Hebert has suddenly turned the Gardner Ten Pins Sport Challenge race for high average into a meaningful contest once again courtesy of his big 727 - his second consecutive 700 set - that closed him to within one pin of league leader John Zawalick.

A quick glance at the standings this week revealed the first positive signs for Factor X thus far in the second half of the season, as they began slowly inching their way up the right-hand (low-order) side of the standings sheet, up to 12th place but still six points under .500. In stark contrast, no rose-colored glasses were needed in order to find an abundance of good things to talk about regarding Factor X's Puzzle opponent; the team had soared into first place at 17-3 on the arms of Dave Noyes and Tiny Coderre, the latter of whom has already bowled two 800s this half - the first to 800s of his career.

What is it about MNH second halves and Factor X? Year after year, this team seems to finish the first half near the top of the standings, only to fall flat on their collective faces in the second half? Three weeks into half number two, Factor X is still looking for their first win. They extended their losing streak to 0-for-3 with a 4-1 loss this week to the Patriots.

Ask either Factor X, Incorporated team what they thought of week three's blind draw, and you'll get two different responses based on which team you ask. Talk to Bill or Will Allen of Factor X Dos, and they'll tell you that if they could finish out the rest of the season bowling against the Brooklyn Babes on the Scorpion pattern, that would be perfectly okay with them; all they did was follow up last week's 13-3 thrashing of Factor S˛ with an even more-dominant 15-1 thrashing of the Babes. Ask that same question to Tom Clukay or Henry Caouette of Factor X however, and you'd better be dressed in attire appropriate for the front row of a Gallagher Sledge-o-Matic comedy show, because they're likely to blow chunks after this week's 2-14 Aramark abomination.

Both Factor X, Incorporated teams will be hoping that this could be the season they finally break through, but if either Factor X or Factor X Dos are to accomplish that feat, it'll require better efforts than what took place in week one of 2008. The sweep catapulted Factor X forward yet again, into an unlikely tie for fourth place with Tate's Mates, who entered the night a full five points ahead of the X'ers, but was swept by Puzzle. Seeded in 14th place as little as two months ago, the X Team climbed an incredible ten places in the standings in the final eight weeks, finishing the season with 35 wins against just 5 losses during that span.

That news was music to the ears of Henry Caouette and Tom Clukay, whose Factor X team had been 0-for-3 against the duo of Mike Budwick and Jason Hebert. But for their Factor X II cousins, the mood after the match was significantly more somber, as Stan Meunier and Steve Budwick stepped up when they had to, coming from behind to beat Team Dos 10-6, officially ending any Factor X, Inc. hopes for a Fall 2007 championship season.

Factor X and Factor X II are each headed in different directions heading into this season's semi-final and final rounds, which is great news for Factor X II and a crushing blow for Factor X. Despite being 3-0 in head-to-head battles against their X II cousins, it's appearing more and more as though Factor X II will get the last laugh in 2007 after their stunning sweep of the first place team in week 14 - the first such sweep of the season by any team. Not to be outdone, Henry Caouette and Tom Clukay came within one single point of becoming the second team to accomplish the feat in their battle against next-to-last-place Soucy-Marois... the only problem being that they're near sweep was in the opposite direction, officially bringing their quest for a championship this year to an end.

Going up against the twelfth-ranked Hart Breakers this week, Factor X got all they could've asked for, and more. A quick start that featured three big 200 games in the opener, a Hart Breaker offense whose best game on the night was less than 25 pins over average... everything they could've wanted. Yet still, Factor X could not find a way to win, as the Hart Breakers not only survived Factor X's first-game 83-pin onslaught, but found a way to pull off a hard-fought 4-1 win... all without ever having to shoot a single, solitary game above 163 on the evening!

Casey Lucier and the rest of the Four C's may have taken a year away from Monday Night Handicap League action, but they certainly haven't lost their ability to rise to any occasion. Practically unbeatable to start the 2007-08 season, the Four C's came into tonight's match with Factor X blistering their way to a 23-2 pace, rising to virtually every challenge that has been thrown their way. Contrast that with the hard times that have befallen Factor X of late, and one could easily have predicted that this would go down as the mismatch of all mismatches; a battle of two teams headed in two opposite directions. And indeed, if all that mattered was the final result, the wins and losses, the black and the white of it all, there can be no mistake: this week's 4-1 loss to the Four C's was another example of how poorly the Factor X season has started, how poorly their timing has been of late, how bad their luck has been at key times, and how far they still have to go in terms of becoming a cohesive unit. But for those of you who believe there's more to bowling than just the plusses and minuses, read on - because despite Team X's third consecutive loss, there were signs this past week that stronger nights may be on the horizon, and that the team may finally be on the verge of returning to winning ways.

When Factor X and Zippy the Pinheads first met on Shark way back in late May, it was Zippy's who came away with the huge 7-1 upset, nearly sweeping away Factor X had it not been for game two tie, resulting in each team taking one point apiece. Coming off a Nationals appearance, Tom Clukay was extremely confident. Both Matt Coe and Tom Budzinski were eager and optimistic heading into their first battle with the long Shark pattern. X was near the top of the standings, and seeing that Zippy's would have to take a blind score for one of their missing bowlers only added to their pre-match swagger. But by the end of the night, it was Zippy's, not X, who were strutting out the Merrimack Ten Pin exits. So when X discovered they were getting a rematch this week, curiously enough on the same Shark pattern, there was no over-confidence this time around. Talk to any one of the X'ers before the start of the match this time, and all you got was a sense of focus with just a hint of finality, knowing that if they took the Zipsters for granted again this time, there were no more weeks in front of them, no chance to make another recovery.

A solid outing and an 8-0 sweep of Just Us by Factor X this past week did wonders for the team's confidence, but wasn't enough to keep them in contention for a repeat of last year's first-place finish. For while they did in fact close the gap considerably on the three teams they were chasing, they enter the final week five points behind first-place Wow Wow and four points behind second place Who Are We, meaning that even if they were to sweep third place Zippy's in next week's position round, there is no mathematical combination of events that could take place that would enable them to move ahead of both Wow Wow and Who Are We (who will be bowling each other).

It was the hottest day of the summer thus far, with the temperature registering over 100 degrees in many parts of inland Massachusetts. The action proved almost as warm inside Merrimack Ten Pins this week as well, with two of the top three teams in the league - Factor X and Wow Wow - set to do battle for a second consecutive week. Last week on Cheetah, neither team got the better of the other, with Wow Wow getting off to the quick 4-0 start, only to watch Factor X knot the series 4-4 in typical X come-from-behind fashion. This week's Scorpion pattern had Wow Wow licking their chops this time around, convinced that this week's tougher scoring conditions combined with their superior handicap would give them the advantage.

It seems as though Factor X can do no wrong these days. Murphy's Law was in full effect as the team prepared for their match against this week's opponent, fourth place Jim's Team. Team anchor Tom Clukay arrived late - too late for his normal pre-match warm-up games - muttering to himself over everything that had gone wrong earlier in the day, not the least of which was his seemingly indestructible six-ball roller breaking not once, but twice on the way to the lanes. Life wasn't going any easier for middle-man Tom Budzinski either, who was forced to call the team just moments before bowling and give them the bad news regarding his inability to make game one, courtesy of Boston traffic. Yet amid all these distractions, all Factor X did this week was sweep Jim's Team 8-love, extend their consecutive win streak to 20 consecutive points, up their record to an impressive 42-6 over the last six weeks, and close to within a single point of first place.

There's always something to improve upon, gain a better understanding of, of just add a new weapon to the tool box in terms of knocking down more pins than the last time you saw a certain pattern. And for Christina Lamoureux, her latest weapon of choice this week would prove to be a freshly-drilled pin-down Black Widow which she had purchased at the USBC Open Championships in Reno one week before.

While categorizing Factor X's climax to the 2006-07 tournament season as a failure would be without a doubt overly harsh, it would be equally inappropriate to categorize it an unqualified success, either. Injuries, dropouts, business ventures, cross-country moves, and personal issues all combined to make this year's trip one of the team's out-of-focus tournaments in recent history, with the emphasis at times seemingly anywhere but on the lanes. In fact, given all of this year's off-the-field distractions, it's quite a testament that some of this year's participants bowled as well as they did.

Week three of the Merrimack PBA Experience Summer Classic league proved to be yet another challenge for Factor X, Incorporated... one which no one could have possibly anticipated. Secretary/treasurer Brad Brown gave the X'ers the bad news as they strolled through the MTP entrance:"There was a malfunction with the oiling machine this week," he stated. "You're going to be bowling on the Viper pattern instead of Scorpion."

The 2007 Lilac Tour has come and gone. And while X, Incorporated may not be coming away with a lot of cash in this year's event, each and every teammate, from first year rookie to twenty-five year veteran, came away with something that, for bowlers, is almost as important: self-respect.

It's finally official. The 3,488 handicap score Factor X tossed in Rutland Vermont this past March in the team event of the Green Mountain Open proved good enough to net them a 15th place finish, earning the team a nifty little $250 check for all their efforts.

In years past, Factor X has not officially entered a team in the Lilac tournament per se, as they have not sent enough team members to Rochester to field a team of their own. Instead, they merged their players with Jimmy Girard's Northampton crew, creating in essence a couple of quasi-Factor X hybrids. That all changes in 2007. Factor X will be sending four members of its Gardner-based entourage to the tournament this year, including Matt Coe, Tom Clukay, Bill Allen, and Will Allen. Combined with Northampton X-men Jimmy Girard and Gary Subocz, the team will have more than enough participants this year to officially enter Factor X as one of this year's teams vying for the big money.

It was a beautiful day for a drive up the scenic Mohawk Trail this past Sunday. With temperatures in the 60s under brilliant blue sunny skies, the drive seemed more like a family vacation for the Clukays and the Allens, both of whom made the trek to Mount Greylock Bowl in North Adams, Massachusetts with their entire families in tow. And if only the weather inside the bowling center had been as beautiful as the weather outside, this day could've been one of the team's best all-around expeditions ever. But despite respectable all-around scoring by some of the Factor X faithful, the record-high scoring pace taking place at this year's MTPBA Championships would claim Factor X as their victim in 2007, leaving the team to settle for a scenic drive, some beautiful weather, excellent companionship, and a delicious Mothers Day dinner.

"They've been waiting a long time for this, they almost won it last year," was secretary-treasurer Mike Caouette's comment to the league as he introduced first-time PBA Experience doubles champions Tom Budzinski and John Egeland. In a twist of irony, it was the very same Michael Caouette, along with father Henry, who twice last season managed to wrest the championship away from Budzinski and company, accounting for X II's back-to-back championships last year. X II extended their win streak to three consecutive championships this past fall before finally succumbing to Aramark this spring.

Redemption!

It was a tournament Factor X has been looking forward to all year. In 2006, poor pin carry and ill-timed mistakes resulted in one of the team's poorest CIT performances in recent history. On what is normally a very high-scoring lane condition, not one single teammate broke 700, and the team earned but one token check at the end of the tournament for Tom Clukay's 719 handicap singles score; a score that barely snuck past the low to cash line when all was said and done. What a difference a year makes. This year, the team leaves town with just the slightest hint of a swagger to their step, scoring performances aplenty, and member names plastered all over the leader board - in some cases, quite prominently.

Can it get any worse for Tom Clukay and Paul Falk? For the second time in three weeks, the team bowled respectably, but got no respect. The disser this time around? Gisi Dellmuth and Pat Rushia of Double Trouble. Despite coming in as the "coolest team in the league" having won less than 25 percent of their points over the last three weeks, the Trouble-makers had no trouble at all dispensing with Clukay and company to the tune of 12-4. The loss assures Factor X of getting to compete next week in "Toilet Bowl II' as well, this time (unofficially) against Eric Varone and Sarah Aubuchon of Indecisive.

Displeased with their performances of late, Tom Clukay and Matt Coe's desire to return to their winning ways could easily be seen in this week's pre-game ritual, as both bowlers decided to bowl more practice games than usual heading into their match-up with first place Cinema World. Unfortunately for Clukay, Coe and the rest of the Factor X contingent, all the practice in the world can't always account for bad breaks, as the team would soon discover as they migrated from their practice lanes one pair to the right... where yet another heartbreaking night awaited them.

They may not be dominating all their opponents this season; heck, half the time they may not even be bowling that well at all, but Aramark has certainly led a charmed life this season, at least so far. Aramark took on a last place Factor X team this past week, a team that has been both down on its luck and its health in 2007. And yet, despite Tom Clukay's seemingly sleep-walking through the match en route to his lowest series of any league or tournament in 2007, the best Aramark could muster against their diametrically opposite opponent was an 8-8 tie... which believe it or not, actually enabled Aramark to stretch their lead in the league to 9-1/2 points!

If bowling centers were bars and strikes and wins cocktails, then Factor X these days would be the teetotaling bar patron who swilled down some really bad ju-ju juice; yeah, the first one may go down smoothly enough, but stumble back to the bar for a second or third, and you spend the rest of your night playing a different sport altogether: cookie tossing. So it has been for Factor X of late, and so it would be again this week in their match against Emil's Animals.

For Factor X, Inc., good stories will be hard to come by after this week's Dream Team debacle... the second in as many meetings between the two teams this season. It seems like whenever Ron Bernard and the Dream Team come knocking on Factor X's door, weird things happen... and this week proved no exception.

The season's second blind draw yielded rematches for both Factor X and Factor X II this week, both with dire consequences. Both teams lost 12-4 this week, with USA III gaining a measure of revenge (finally) against Factor X II and Just Practicing beating Factor X for the second consecutive time. The loss was Factor X's fifth in the last six weeks, and drops them even farther into the depths of last place.

It was one of X II's best all-around efforts of the season. Both Henry and Michael Caouette were consistent throughout, making navigation of the Shark look almost effortless. Both bowlers played between second and third arrow throughout, Michael with a little more ball speed and Henry with more finesse. The pair scored 382 scratch in their first game before lining up for follow-up scores of 419 and 409. The lowest game thrown by either bowler was 180, the highest was 222, and Michael Caouette's scores never varied more than 5 pins all night.

When these two teams last met in October, the Hart Breakers surged to a 4-1 victory over X, thanks in great part to the heroic efforts of bowlers like Janice Gerry and Theresa Gautreau. And while Gerry and Gautreau were effectively held at bay this time around, the net results when all was said and done were just as devastating for X - if not more-so - as yet another sub-par scoring performance by X would enable the Hart Breakers to stay within striking distance, pulling out a huge come-from-behind 3-2 victory thanks to a lop-sided 112-pin win in the final moments.

Without a doubt, Factor X will not be sorry to have hopefully seen the last of the Mixed Nuts in 2006-07. When these two teams first met in early October, the Mixed Nuts came away with a huge 4-1 victory - one of their few on the season - despite strong performances by X-men Henry Caouette (640), Will Allen (662) and Matt Coe (706). From a scoring perspective, this week's rematch bore little resemblance to that fall slugfest, but the results proved just as ugly... if not uglier. In a match up that was almost as low-scoring as October's contest was high-scoring, the Nuts completed their annihilation of Factor X with a big 5-0 sweep that put the final exclamation point on their regular-season battles with Team X this year, bringing their overall record against the X'ers to 9-1.

Whether its dominating scoring performances or having to make key shots in key situations, teammates Aris Cormier, Gary Rahaim, Mark Manca, Ken Michaud, and the rest of the Ambusher entourage just seem to have mastered the art of knowing what it takes to win... then making it happen. Which is why what's going on with the Ambushers thus far in the second half of the season is so perplexing.

Whether Monday or Wednesday nights, Factor X has pretty much had its way with USA this season, ever since former Factor X star Brian Baird opted to resign his league bowling commission with Factor X for an opportunity to bowl with the power-hungry USA all stars. So needless to say, USA in particular was looking forward to this Monday night rematch; possibly their last chance in 2006-07 to make a retaliatory statement in the X'ers' direction. USA got their rematch this past Monday night, along with some payback... ironically, on a night in which Brian Baird would end up sitting on the bench, sidelined by an injury to the middle finger on his bowling hand. In a match that bore little resemblance to past meetings due to injuries on both sides, USA came from behind to defeat X 4-1, saving some 2006-07 face in the process.

As in years past, Clukay is not planning on participating in the event himself, but is hoping there is enough interest amongst his fellow teammates to field a team.

Despite setting a GCO participation record in 2006, this year's edition of the Gold Crown Open in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont will not go down as one that was especially lucrative for Factor X, Inc. For while there were several solid isolated scoring performances for the eleven team members who competed in this year's event, record high scores will no doubt keep paychecks at a minimum.

But as the X II lead dwindled down to a single point with but two games left to the 2006 season, Michael and Henry Caouette did what they do best: rise above the adversity to claim their third consecutive Sport Doubles championship!

In a season that originally looked like it was going to be the first runaway since the league's 16-point system was first implemented, what has transpired over the course of the last five weeks since Factor X II built up its largest lead of the season - a whopping 21-point advantage over the next-closest team - is truly amazing. Proving just how difficult a task it is to maintain an advantage over the rest of the Sport bowling field in a handicap league over the course of 16 weeks, bad luck and hard times have conspired to shrink X II's lead to a scant three points heading into the final position round, setting up a winner-take-all match against their Factor X cousins.

And while this year's GCO tournament may hold some surprises for us in terms of the weather (or lack thereof), few surprises exist in the scoring column - which is as high, or higher than ever - other than the fact that there are no Keene bowlers currently leading any of the tournament categories, which are currently dominated by the Barre, Vermont contingent.

The news was not nearly so positive for either of the other two Factor X, Inc. teams this week, as X II lost to KY 9-7 and RTO took over in their match up with X III to defeat the Allens 13-3. The Factor X win, combined with X II's loss to KY, shrinks X II's lead in the standings to a mere 7 points.

Only two 600 sets would be recorded on the evening (Matt Coe, 608; Tom Clukay, 607), and seven of the night's ten combatants would shoot below average; only Clint Goodnow (+27 over average), Juanita Clukay (+24 over average) and Tom Clukay (+13 over average) would prove immune to the week's low-scoring effects.
